Pegula triumphs in Berlin!
Having missed most of the clay-court season, Jessica Pegula has just made quite a comeback. Although she was beaten in the second round at Bois-le-Duc, the American has just completed an impressive tournament in Berlin.
After defeating Coco Gauff in the semi-finals (7-5, 7-6), the world no. 5 went through all kinds of emotions in the final on Sunday.
Up against an opportunistic and determined Anna Kalinskaya, Pegula came very close to defeat. After trailing by a set and saving five title points, she came out fighting to win her first chance (6-7, 6-4, 7-6 in 2h38).
Not concealing her immense emotion at the end of the match, the 30-year-old can be proud of what she has just achieved.
As the icing on the cake, she consolidates her 5th place in the rankings and takes some distance from her main pursuers (Vondrousova, Paolini, Zheng).
