Alors qu'il n'avait plus disputé de match officiel depuis sa défaite en demies de l'US Open, déclarant notamment forfait pour la Coupe Davis, l'Espagnol n'a pas manqué sa reprise. Il a dominé Hanfmann pour rejoindre Musetti au 2e tour.
