Season over for Naomi Osaka: "A very difficult decision".
Naomi Osaka is forced to call time on her 2024 season. The former world No.1, currently 56th in the WTA rankings, has suffered a back and abdominal injury. As a result, she will not be taking part in the Billie Jean King Cup (November 13-20), after having to withdraw from the Tokyo tournament (WTA 500), which begins this Monday.
The Japanese player will now concentrate on preparing for the 2025 season with her new coach, Frenchman Patrick Mouratoglou. After a successful return to competition this year, she will probably be aiming for a return to the forefront next year. Perhaps as early as the Australian Open (January 12-16), which she has already won twice (2019, 2021).
Naomi Osaka: "I thought I'd pulled a muscle in my back, but I had an MRI in Beijing and was told I had a bulging disc in my back and that I'd also ruptured my abdominal muscles.
I've played so many tournaments this year that the decision not to play this tournament (Tokyo) and, of course, the BJK Cup, was the hardest to make. Honestly, I've always really enjoyed this tournament (Tokyo) and I think it's helped me develop as a player."
