Sinner masters De Minaur on Masters debut
In front of his home crowd, Jannik Sinner won his first match in the Nastase group against Alex De Minaur (6-3, 6-4) in just over an hour's play.
Despite a slight scare at the start of the match (broken at 2-1), the world No.1 reacted immediately by tightening up his game and forcing his opponent to commit unforced errors.
Without playing his best tennis, but more solid in the exchanges, Sinner won the first set 6-3.
In the second set, play was interrupted for a few minutes due to a spectator's discomfort. De Minaur conceded the break in the wake of this interruption and never had the opportunity to get back into the match.
Sinner will face Taylor Fritz on Tuesday for a place in the semi-finals, while De Minaur will play the survival match against Daniil Medvedev.
