Soonwoo Kwon soon to be called up for military service
Last year, Soonwoo Kwon's hopes of avoiding military service were dashed when he was beaten at the Asian Games, where he had to win the gold medal.
As is customary in South Korea, all men between the ages of 18 and 35 are required to undergo military service, although athletes may be exempted if they win medals at the Asian Games or Olympic Games.
After losing his opportunity last season, Kwon now knows the start date of his military service, which will last 18 months.
On his Instagram account, the 27-year-old announced the news yesterday with these few words: "I will join the army on January 13, 2025. My life as a tourist will come to a halt for almost two years.
But I'll be back stronger than you can imagine.
Many people say it's too late to start playing again at 30... But I think I'll be at my peak at 30 and I'm confident.
I've only achieved 20% of the goals I set myself."
