Thiem and professional tennis are over!

A small page in the history of our sport has been turned.

Dominic Thiem has said goodbye to professional tennis for good.

Beaten by Luciano Darderi in a match that lasted just one set (7-6, 6-2), the US Open 2020 winner is no longer a professional player.

Initially flamboyant, he gradually exploded and had no choice but to let his opponent end his career.

On an emotional central court, Thiem can now, at the age of 31, concentrate on the next stage of his life.

For the rest of the tennis world, it's time to say goodbye and thank you to this immense champion.

Thanks to Dominic for the entertainment and extremely high level tennis during the golden years. The future looked very bright but the destiny wanted otherwise. Sad ending of the career but he should exit with the head high and look back to a career the most players can just dream about.

He was second only to Nadal on clay at his peak. Fantastic level achieved, and I am glad he won a slam in the end. Shame he never had the chance to add to it. It would have been great to have him still in the mix. All the best.
