Zverev takes the lead against Alcaraz!
What's happening on the Chatrier is strange. After a first set largely dominated by Alcaraz and a second clearly in Zverev's favor, this third set was also very disjointed, but in the end it was the German who came out on top (3-6, 6-2, 7-5).
At first, Zverev missed the first set completely, letting his opponent distribute the play and take control of the match (6-3). However, coming back strongly, he seemed to have rediscovered his best tennis in the second set (6-2) before faltering a second time, fortunately without too many consequences.
In a bluffing game of communicating vessels, he had taken advantage of Alcaraz's slump to regain the upper hand. However, he was unable to keep up the momentum. Dominant at the start of the third set, he was unable to seize his opportunities, unlike the world's 3rd-ranked player. Yet he never gave up. Showing superb resilience, he completely turned the match around, winning 5 games in a row to take the third act (7-5).
Very nervous since the start of the match, the world No. 4 is now loosening up and releasing his strokes. Regaining confidence in both his serve and his groundstrokes, Zverev has been imposing his rhythm on the match for several dozen minutes now. He is now just one set away from the grail he has been seeking for so many years: a Grand Slam title.
Opposite him, Carlos Alcaraz is far too inconsistent to destabilize an increasingly strong German. With his back against the wall, he'll have to replace unforced errors with winning shots if he's to get back into the match. At this stage, winning the French Open would be a minor miracle for the 21-year-old.
Stay tuned!
