WTA rankings after the Australian Open: Gracheva, world no. 69, French no. 1

WTA rankings after the Australian Open: Gracheva, world no. 69, French no. 1

French women's tennis failed to shine at the Australian Open.

Of the five French players entered in the main singles draw, only Varvara Gracheva managed to reach the second round.

After her opening win over Catherine McNally (6-3, 6-4), she then fell to German lucky loser Eva Lys in three sets in the second round.

As for the rest of Gracheva's compatriots, the record is four defeats in the first round.

While Caroline Garcia inherited a tricky draw in the shape of Naomi Osaka, Léolia Jeanjean (against Jodie Burrage), Chloé Paquet (against Cristina Bucsa) and Diane Parry (against Donna Vekic) left Melbourne on their debut.

As a result of this first Grand Slam of 2025, France's highest-ranked player in the WTA rankings is Varvara Gracheva, now 69th.

Six places further back is Caroline Garcia in 75th position. Diane Parry, who reached the third round in Melbourne in 2024, drops 20 places and is the third and last player representing France in the top 100 (86th).

Chloé Paquet, who was unable to eliminate Bucsa, is 120th, while Kristina Mladenovic, a former member of the top 10, is back in the top 200.

Last but not least, Océane Dodin, last year's eighth-place finalist in Melbourne, was not present this year and fell 60 places to 175th on the WTA rankings.
