Berrettini's letter to tennis: "I felt you were going to be the love of my life".

Berrettini's letter to tennis: I felt you were going to be the love of my life.

Always a very dangerous player when he's at his best, Matteo Berrettini, former world No. 6 and Wimbledon finalist in 2021, lent himself to the game during a series of videos organized by the ATP.

Following in the footsteps of Grigor Dimitrov, the 28-year-old Italian, who has been hard hit by injuries in recent years, was asked to think up a love letter to tennis.

"Dear tennis, my family introduced me to you. It's something that ran in our veins. The first thing they were able to give me was a racket when I was three years old.

I remember it very well, because at first I didn't like you at all and stopped playing. I started again when I was eight, because my brother, who is younger than me, told me to try again.

My brother always chose Djokovic and I chose Federer. We'd play for hours, just having fun.

I felt you were going to be the love of my life. We didn't get off to the best of starts, but I've been lucky enough to change a few things, and now I like you completely.

You've been part of my life ever since. In Rome 2017, in my home tournament, I lost badly to Fabio Fognini.

But at the same time, I felt so many emotions that I wanted to live again. I wanted to start again and improve.

You sometimes made me understand certain things in a brutal way, but that's also why I'm here today.

All the bad times that happened, I consider worthwhile because they allowed me to appreciate you in every aspect.

I won a few titles, reached a Grand Slam final.

I played in the ATP Finals in London and Turin.

You taught me to be resilient, to keep fighting and to trust the people I work with.

For me, it's not just about the sport, but also the chance to meet people and make friends.

I've been lucky enough to meet people who have changed my life. After all these years on the circuit, I think I know you pretty well by now.

It'll be fun to see what's in store for both of us in the future", he elaborated.
