It's been a perfect start to the competition for China. Not necessarily favourites on paper, the team led by Zheng won every match in their 3-0 victory over Brazil to take command of the group.
The Chinese demonstration made itself felt from the very first match. Indeed, Gao Xinyu, 175ᵉ world player, showed the way by creating the exploit against Béatriz Haddad Maïa, 17ᵉ world player (5-7, 6-4, 7-5).
A strong Zhang perfectly secured his nation's victory, giving a tennis lesson to an unresponsive Monteiro (6-3, 6-0).
Finally, the Chinese finished off the affair perfectly, winning the non-decisive doubles in two sets (6-4, 7-5).
Next up for them is a duel against Alexander Zverev's Germany in a bid to finish top of their group.
