Mouratoglou on the Alcaraz-Sinner rivalry: "I don't think we can say that Jannik is far above Carlos".

Mouratoglou on the Alcaraz-Sinner rivalry: I don't think we can say that Jannik is far above Carlos.

Jannik Sinner won his third Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

The Italian, world number 1, came within a single point of Carlos Alcaraz, winner of four Major titles since the start of his career.

The rivalry between the two new stars of world tennis has probably only just begun, which only fuels the debate. Which of these two talents will have the better career?

Former coach of Serena Williams and now coach of Naomi Osaka, Patrick Mouratoglou compared Sinner and Alcaraz.

"Jannik Sinner is not above everyone else, at least not above Alcaraz. When Carlos is at his best, we see real oppositions, and no one can guarantee which of the two will win when they come up against each other.

All their encounters have been very close, with an uncertain outcome. Carlos has won some big matches against Sinner. These two players are, for the moment, better than the rest of the circuit.

Alcaraz makes more unforced errors than Sinner, and takes far more risks. Jannik's quality is that he plays at breakneck speed without missing a shot, which is his main asset", he assures us.

"Carlos' main quality is the power he exudes with his racket and his ability to change pace. He goes at a certain speed, then he's able to accelerate.

Jannik simply plays at an extremely high speed all the time. The fact that Carlos makes more mistakes may give the impression that he's less dominant in matches against other players, but he has a crazy margin over his opponents.

Look at what both players have achieved. They won two Grand Slams each in 2024, and Carlos, for the moment, has one more Grand Slam by being two years younger.

I don't think it's true to say that Jannik is far superior to Carlos," he concludes for Tennis Up To Date.
