Gasquet loses to Griekspoor in Montpellier despite strong resistance
The end of the road for Richard Gasquet and the Montpellier tournament.
At the age of 38 and just a few months away from retirement, the Biterrois was knocked out in the 2nd round by Tallon Griekspoor, ranked 46th in the world (6-3, 3-6, 7-5), despite a fine battle lasting over two hours.
The Dutchman had won the first set comfortably, breaking in the middle of the set.
Gasquet, then more solid on his serve in the second set (6 aces, 88% of points won behind his first serve), managed to prolong the match by going on to win a third set.
In the end, it was the Frenchman who cracked first in the money-time, at 6-5 in favor of his opponent, sending a final backhand out of bounds.
Griekspoor will play tomorrow in the quarter-finals against compatriot Jesper De Jong, who defeated Flavio Cobolli on Thursday (6-3, 7-6).
Richard Gasquet bids farewell to the Montpellier tournament, which he has won three times (2013, 2015 and 2016) in six finals contested.
