Tsitsipas saves match point and upsets Griekspoor in Rotterdam
One of Thursday's thrilling matches took place in Rotterdam. In the Round of 16, crowd favorite Tallon Griekspoor was looking to confirm his success over Matteo Berrettini against Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The Greek, seeded 6th in this Dutch tournament, had eliminated Harold Mayot in his opening match.
The match lived up to all expectations.
In a match that was tight from start to finish, it was Griekspoor who got off to the best possible start, winning the tiebreak in the first set.
In the second, the Dutchman didn't let up, and pushed his opponent to another tie-break. After saving a match point, Tsitsipas finally got back on level terms.
Following in his footsteps at the end of the set, the two-time Grand Slam finalist broke early in the third set.
Griekspoor, who saw the turn of events go against him, managed to take the Greek's serve, but he finally broke at 5-5, at the worst possible moment, and Tsitsipas didn't hesitate to close out the match after 3 hours of fighting (6-7, 7-6, 7-5).
In the quarter-finals, Stefanos Tsitsipas, who has reached this stage of a tournament for the 80th time in his ATP career, will face Mattia Bellucci, who beat Daniil Medvedev in the previous round.
Griekspoor may regret that unconverted match point, but he can console himself with a return to the top 40 at the end of the tournament.
