Sabalenka on the eve of defending her Australian Open title: "I like being the one being chased".

Sabalenka on the eve of defending her Australian Open title: I like being the one being chased.

Aryna Sabalenka is back in her own backyard. The world No.1 and two-time Australian Open title-holder will be attempting to win the title for the first time since Martina Hingis in the late 90s (1997, 1998 and 1999).

The Belarusian appeared at a pre-tournament press conference in Melbourne in the last few hours.

"I think we're all different. But as far as I'm concerned, there's always been something in my character.

I've always loved competition. I've always enjoyed taking on very difficult challenges. For me, being the one being chased, I don't know how to explain it, but I like it.

I love that feeling. It's what motivates me and keeps me motivated, because I know I'm a target for others. I really like that feeling.

That's why I work so hard, to make sure no one can get to me. Oh, my God, that sounds so arrogant, doesn't it?" she assured us with a touch of humor.

Sabalenka will play her first round match this Sunday against another former Grand Slam winner, Sloane Stephens.
