Germany won their head-to-head match against China (2-1) on Monday evening in Perth. The result qualifies both teams for the competition's quarter-finals.
Alexander Zverev got his side off to a flying start with a three-set win over Zhizhen Zhang (2-6, 6-0, 6-2), but China then pulled level after Gao Xinyu's hard-fought victory over Laura Siegemund (6-1, 3-6, 6-3).
The Siegemund/Zverev pair finally won the decisive doubles match against Shuai Zhang and Zhizhen Zhang in two sets (6-2, 7-6).
The two nations, who had both beaten Brazil 3-0 in Group E, thus qualify for the quarter-finals.
Germany, who finished top of their group, will face Kazakhstan, while China will find out their opponent tomorrow between the USA and Croatia.
