The quarter-final clash in Buenos Aires pitted Alexander Zverev against Francisco Cerundolo. The German, number 2 in the world, came into the match as the favorite, but the Argentinian was at home and always formidable in a match.
Spurred on by the crowd, the world No. 28, who had eliminated Luciano Darderi (6-4, 6-4) and his younger brother Juan Manuel Cerundolo (6-2, 6-3) in the first two rounds, this time took the scalp of one of the best players on the ATP circuit.
After a tricky start, Cerundolo never let up, proving more effective than his opponent on break points (4 out of 5 converted, compared to 2 out of 7 for Zverev).
After 2h18 of play, Francisco Cerundolo, seeded 5th, reached the semi-finals (3-6, 6-3, 6-2), having lost to Diaz Acosta in his first appearance at the same tournament last year.
For a place in the final, Cerundolo will face Pedro Martinez, who took advantage of Lorenzo Musetti's withdrawal due to a calf injury.
The other semi-final clash pits Laslo Djere against João Fonseca. This is Cerundolo's second win over Zverev in as many meetings.
The Argentine had already beaten the German in Madrid last year.
"I'm very happy. It's the biggest win of my career in terms of ranking. He's number 2 in the world and plays incredible tennis.
To be able to beat him here in Buenos Aires in front of my fans, my family and my friends is incredible. It's probably one of the best sensations of my career and of my life", reacted the main man on court after his success.
