Navratilova Rushes to Swiatek's Defense: "She Has Always Been a Humble Champion and a Great Role Model"
Iga Swiatek’s rough patch continues. The Polish world No. 2 has not reached a single final since Roland Garros. Defending champion in Madrid, Swiatek suffered a crushing defeat in the semifinals against Coco Gauff (6-1, 6-1), failing to earn a single break point in the match.
On social media, images of the four-time Roland Garros champion visibly struggling on her chair during the match against the world No. 4 sparked widespread discussion.
After her elimination, Polish media reported that the player had just lost her grandfather before the tournament and attended his funeral shortly before traveling to the Spanish capital, which may have emotionally impacted her performance in the event.
In any case, a tennis legend has recently stepped up to defend Swiatek—Martina Navratilova.
On X (formerly Twitter), a user expressed satisfaction over Swiatek’s elimination before the final, responding to a post by Casper Ruud, who had shown support for the Polish player.
"I’m grateful Coco did her job and made the final. Iga seems to think she can be No. 1 forever—time for her to learn some humility," the user wrote.
A message that did not sit well with Navratilova, who fired back: "A bit mean, no?" The user then replied, "No, Martina, I’m being honest. It’s unfortunate she lost her grandfather," as seen in the exchange.
The matter didn’t end there, as the 68-year-old Navratilova stood by Swiatek: "I don’t see at all what you’re talking about with Iga. She has always been a humble champion and a great role model.
So drop this humility nonsense. You’re as mean as I thought." Iga Swiatek will look to bounce back in the coming days at the WTA 1000 in Rome.
