Alcaraz beats Humbert, France is eliminated from the Davis Cup
There was no miracle.
After the frustrating defeat of Arthur Fils in the first singles, beaten by a resilient Roberto Bautista Agut (2-6, 7-5, 6-3), Ugo Humbert simply couldn't do anything this Friday against Alcaraz (6-3, 6-3 in 1h21).
Having arrived on court over-motivated, the French No. 1 was soon forced to face the facts: he simply wasn't strong enough.
In a packed Valencia arena, Humbert almost never troubled the world number 3, and was unable to take advantage of the few chances he did get (0 break points converted out of 6).
In the end, Fils' counter-performance definitively cost Les Bleus any hope of success, and they now face the Czech Republic in a match with nothing at stake this Saturday.
For their part, the Spaniards are already assured of a place in the Final 8, scheduled for November in Malaga.
