Shelton: "I was a bit shocked this week by the way the players were treated by the broadcasters"
Ben Shelton reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, defeating Lorenzo Sonego in four sets.
In a press conference, he spoke about the controversy surrounding the tournament's official broadcaster, Channel 9, and his feelings on the matter.
He declared: "I'd just like to say one thing in conclusion. I've been a bit shocked this week by the way the players have been treated by the broadcasters.
I don't think the person who made fun of Novak Djokovic was an isolated case. I've noticed it with other people, not just myself.
With Learner Tien at one of his matches, I think when he beat Medvedev, his post-match interview felt embarrassing and disrespectful.
There were comments made to me in the post-match interviews by different people, like "Hey, Monfils is old enough to be your dad. Maybe he is your dad.
Or today on the court, "Hey, Ben, how do you feel about the idea that, whoever your next opponent is, nobody's going to cheer you on?"
That may be true, but I don't think it's a respectful comment from a man I've never met in my life.
I think broadcasters should help us develop our sport and help these athletes who have just won matches on the biggest stage enjoy one of their greatest moments.
I feel like there's been a lot of negativity. I think that's something that needs to change."
Also stop acting like a 12 year old douche, each time you win a match, with those cringeworthy celebrations.
