Berrettini Back in Training After Aussie Open Injury Withdrawal, Eyes Full South American Clay Swing
Matteo Berrettini wants to finally string matches together in 2026. The Italian, who hasn't played an official match since the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna at the end of last year, is nursing an abdominal injury that forced him to withdraw from the Australian Open at the last minute.
He was scheduled to face Alex de Minaur in the first round, and the 2022 semifinalist thus suffered yet another setback in his career. However, the 29-year-old is finally poised to return to competition.
Berrettini Aims to Regain Rhythm in South America
As reported by Spazio Tennis, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist has resumed training and should participate in the South American swing in February. Berrettini is currently entered in three clay-court events (Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Santiago).
After racking up several tournaments at the end of last season, the former world No. 6, who hasn't been spared by injuries in recent years, hopes to finally shake off his physical troubles.
Currently No. 57 in the ATP rankings, he will compete in the full South American swing for the first time in his career, having only played the Rio event in 2022 (quarterfinal loss to Carlos Alcaraz).
