Coco Gauff Describes Injury as 'Fireworks Exploding in My Arm' After Indian Wells Withdrawal
Coco Gauff's Indian Wells Nightmare: Forced to Retire with 'Fireworks' Pain in Arm Against Alexandra Eala
Unfortunately for her, Coco Gauff was forced to retire against Alexandra Eala at Indian Wells. In the post-match press conference, the American discussed her left arm injury.
She stated: "Yes, I felt it from the second game of the first set. To put it simply, I felt like fireworks were exploding in my arm, then my whole arm started burning.
"Likely Nerve-Related"
We'll try to figure out what it is tomorrow, but based on what I felt, I was told it was likely nerve-related. I've never felt anything like this before.
And then, as the match went on, it got worse, even when I wasn't using my arm to hit, even when I wasn't using my left arm. Sometimes I felt like fireworks were exploding. It was a scary sensation.
"We'll See Tomorrow What It Is"
I think it happened after a forehand, and then, yes, it just kept getting worse. I tried to keep going, but since it didn't seem like a muscle or bone issue, I felt like my arm was on fire.
I didn't feel comfortable continuing, because usually with those kinds of pains, I know what to expect, but I've never had nerve pain before. Again, we'll see tomorrow what it is, but I guess that's it."
