Doubles specialist Koolhof retires after Masters elimination
Doubles player Wesley Koolhof played his last match on the ATP circuit earlier this afternoon after being eliminated from the Masters alongside Nikola Mektic.
Beaten by the Heliovaara / Patten pair in a super tie-break, Koolhof and Mektic were eliminated from this 2024 edition of the Masters. Frustrated by the elimination scenario, he broke his racket on the court after shaking hands.
This reaction can be explained by the fact that this was the Dutchman's last match on the circuit, and at 35 he has decided to retire.
Winner of Wimbledon in 2023 and the Masters in 2020, Koolhof had also reached the number 1 doubles ranking in the world at the end of 2022. A short tribute was paid to him on center court in Turin (see video below).
Before retiring completely from the world of professional tennis, he will take part in the Davis Cup with the Netherlands next week.
