Great Britain will not see the Davis Cup finals.
Engaged in a last-chance encounter, the British couldn't find the key against the in-form Canadians.
Beaten soundly by Shapovalov (6-0, 7-5), Dan Evans appeared disappointed but also pensive at the press conference.
At 34, the right-hander expressed reservations about his future in the Davis Cup.
In comments relayed by the BBC, he explained: "I've thought about it for a long time. I'll have to think about it some more. I love playing for my country.
I loved every minute of it, but sometimes you have to stop.
It will be a difficult decision to make, but sometimes it's nice to give someone else a chance and watch from afar."
