Holger Rune, Rehabbing Achilles Rupture, Set for Hamburg ATP 500 in May – Earlier-Than-Expected Return Before Roland Garros
Holger Rune continues his rehabilitation. World No. 29 has been sidelined from the tour since last October due to an Achilles tendon rupture in the semifinals of the Stockholm ATP 250 against Ugo Humbert.
Since his surgery, the Dane has made steady progress, quickly advancing through his rehab stages. Already back to hitting balls in training several weeks ago, the 22-year-old is eager to return to competition as soon as possible.
Originally expected to miss nearly all of the 2026 season, Rune now appears close to a return to the tour. Indeed, the Hamburg ATP 500 announced on Thursday, April 9, that the former World No. 4 will take part in the German city.

As a reminder, the clay-court event will run from May 16 to 23, the week before Roland Garros. The organizers have confirmed his entry on their website: “The Bitpanda Hamburg Open is preparing to welcome back one of the ATP Tour's most promising players.
Holger Rune will make his highly anticipated return next May at the Hamburg ATP 500. For the 22-year-old Dane, the Rothenbaum tournament marks a key milestone after a long injury layoff. This return to tennis's grandest stage also sends a strong competitive signal,” the organizers stated in a press release.
The player himself reacted to his likely participation: “The real challenge starts in Hamburg. I can’t wait to get back on clay at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open and finally soak up the on-site atmosphere after such a long break,” assured Rune.
