Issue des qualifications, Sofia Kenin a livré un match très solide pour s'offrir un 2e tour et sa compatriote Cori Gauff en 3 sets et 2h de match sur le court 1.
Malgré les 121 places qui séparaient les deux Étasuniennes, le match fut très accroché.
