The German had to sit out this week, leaving his rivals to play and collect ATP points.
Carlos Alcaraz, who qualified for the semi-finals in Beijing, has just overtaken the German in the ATP rankings.
One semi-final was all he needed, and he secured his ticket for this one on Monday.
Having beaten Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals (7-5, 6-2), the Spaniard is now Jannik Sinner's runner-up and, given their respective seasons, it's only logical.
On the tournament front, Alcaraz will face Daniil Medvedev for a place in the final.
