Pegula Confident: 'Developing Strategies That Work Well Against Sabalenka and Rybakina'
Pegula Aims to Match Last Year's Miami Final Run, Believes She Can Challenge Dominant Sabalenka-Rybakina Duo
Jessica Pegula will have to defend plenty of points in the coming days. Finalist at last year's Miami WTA 1000, the American, who won the Dubai WTA 1000 earlier this season, will start her tournament in the second round against compatriot Venus Williams or Francesca Jones.
In her press conference, the 32-year-old reflected on the season start for Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina, and believes that despite their current form, she can trouble them.
“They are rightfully the two best players in the world”
“Most of the big matches I’ve lost were against them (Sabalenka and Rybakina), Coco (Gauff), or the eventual tournament winner, but I’ve improved a lot by refining my game and doing what it takes.
I play a bit more offensively, I’m serving much better, I’m working on my movement, and I’m fine-tuning different strategies and combinations that I think work well against them.
But they’re playing incredible tennis right now and are rightfully the two best players in the world… It’s tough. They’re tall with powerful serves, and sometimes it’s frustrating for someone who isn’t as tall.
But I still think there are things I can do very well and keep improving to put pressure on them,” Pegula assured Tennis One App.
