Jessica Pegula, world No. 5, reaches the Indian Wells round of 16 for the fourth time in her career.

Like her second-round match against Donna Vekic, the American got off to a slow start against Jelena Ostapenko, dropping the first set 6-4. But momentum eventually shifted in her favor.

Pegula Takes Control

More consistent, Pegula gradually seized the advantage, taking the next two sets to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in 1:45.

The winner of Elise Mertens vs. Belinda Bencic awaits her in the round of 16 at the California event. She'll aim for a second quarterfinal appearance after 2021.

Muchova Also Advances

On one of the outer courts, the first women's draw result of the day came quickly: after 1:10 on court, Karolina Muchova crushed Antonia Ruzic 6-0, 6-3. The Czech could face Iga Swiatek in the round of 16 again, like last year, if the world No. 1 defeats Maria Sakkari.
