Holger Rune owned up to his strong gesture at the end of his match against Pedro Martinez in the Davis Cup. But the Dane didn't stop there, also taking on the Spanish public in comments that are already causing a stir.

Holger Rune's Davis Cup weekend turned sour. The leader of Denmark still had his fate in his hands before the second day of competition, as his team was leading 2-0. However, he did not deliver in singles, defeated by Pedro Martinez (6-1, 4-6, 7-5) after a 3h15 battle.

The match was marked by several tense moments with the crowd, Spanish captain David Ferrer, and also the chair umpire, whom Rune refused to shake hands with.

A gesture explained to the Danish press: "He didn't deserve a handshake. He didn't do a good job; he made a lot of mistakes and took strange decisions."

The world No. 11 then went on to make a jab at the Spanish fans: "There are obvious differences between the manners of Danes and Spaniards. There's a slight difference in terms of education. There are certain things that were a bit unsportsmanlike. But it's part of the game and I've experienced worse."
