Sinner crowns Italy Davis Cup champions!
For the second year running, Italy has claimed the Davis Cup crown and retained its title of world champion. Buoyed by an uncompromising Jannik Sinner and a bluffing Matteo Berrettini, the Transalps held their nerve this week to defeat the Netherlands in the final.
After Berrettini's opening win over Botic Van de Zandschulp (6-4, 6-2), Jannik Sinner made sure of the points by resisting Tallon Griekspoor before unravelling (7-6, 6-2).
Faced with an opponent who played his cards close to his chest, the world number 1 initially struggled to find his rhythm, and even saved several break points. Without panicking, he gradually built up his power and finally recited his tennis, enabling his team to clinch the title.
Having already won the women's Billie Jean King Cup, Italy now confirms its status as the leading tennis nation of 2024. Is this the beginning of their hegemony? The coming seasons will tell.
