The World comes close to springing a surprise against Europe in the Laver Cup

A big surprise may be in store in Berlin, where the 2024 edition of the Laver Cup has been underway since Friday. Despite being overwhelming favorites, Team Europe is trailing Team World 8-4 heading into the third and final day of competition on Sunday.

While Carlos Alcaraz held his nerve to defeat Ben Shelton (6-4, 6-4), Daniil Medvedev was beaten 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 by Frances Tiafoe, and Alexander Zverev was once again beaten 6-4, 7-5 by Taylor Fritz, as he had been in the last 16 of Wimbledon and the quarter-finals of the US Open. Finally, to consolidate their lead, John McEnroe's players won the doubles, Ben Shelton and Alejandro Tabilo defeating Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas (6-1, 6-2).

Nothing is lost yet for Bjorn Borg's men. 13 points are needed to win the competition, and each victory will earn 3 points on Sunday. Europe must therefore win 3 of the 4 remaining matches to lift the trophy.
