Dominic Thiem played his final Grand Slam match. The former world No. 3 (2021), currently ranked 210th and invited by the tournament organizers, was logically defeated in the 1st round of this US Open 2024 by Ben Shelton (6-4, 6-2, 6-2).
The Austrian was honored at Arthur Ashe Stadium for his last match at Flushing Meadows. The same court where he reached the pinnacle of his career just 4 years ago, winning the tournament, his only Grand Slam title. Prior to that, he had twice reached the final at Roland Garros (2018 and 2019), where all the specialists imagined he would win at least once.
So, Thiem's professional tennis adventure is almost over. He will conclude it in front of his home crowd at the ATP 500 in Vienna (October 21-27, 2024).
