Federer made a few changes to his game as he got older. One was an old school tactic of stepping well inside the baseline and taking a serve early on the rise. If an opponents biomechanics make it easy to read where he's going with his serve, it's less risky. Federer used it intermittently to try and keep an opponent out of his rhythm. Honestly there was nothing special about it.
