"Do not put me in an awkward position": Djokovic's confessions about his relationship with his wife Jelena
In an interview, Novak Djokovic opened up as rarely before about his love story with his wife Jelena.
Invited by British journalist Piers Morgan for a long interview published on YouTube, the 38-year-old Serbian discussed his private life, including the love story that shaped his life: the one with Jelena Ristic, who became Jelena Djokovic after their marriage in 2014.
"It was funny because the first time I heard about her was when a friend of mine took off his jersey after a match to show a t-shirt on which he had written 'Jelena, I love you'. We were dying of laughter! I thought to myself: 'But who is this Jelena?!'", recounted Djokovic, amused.
Chance then played its part. The two young Serbians found themselves in the same circle of friends before their story truly began in Monte Carlo, in 2007.
"We got together, yes, but let's be clear: she had broken up with my friend before! Do not put me in an awkward position! By the way, I spoke to him yesterday and he's fine. He has moved on. But we never talked about it. I think we are both uncomfortable. We remained friends so everything is fine," jokes the player.
Married since 2014, parents of two children: Stefan (11 years old) and Tara (8 years old), the Djokovics form a couple that has lasted for 18 years. And together, they have also built the Novak Djokovic Foundation, which works for the education of underprivileged young children in Serbia.
