Draper confesses: "When I was young, I didn't want to make an effort"
Jack Draper had a very good year in 2024, winning two titles on the ATP circuit, in Stuttgart and Vienna.
After a number of injuries that slowed his progress, the 22-year-old Briton has reached the highest ranking of his career in recent weeks, 15th.
However, he revealed that he hadn't always done what it took to get there:
"When I was young, I didn't have a hard-working mentality. When you're younger, you enter the world of tennis and you don't really know what it's all about.
It's a brutal change, because you realize that if you want to be good, you have to mature and be an adult by the age of 20.
I wasn't prepared for all that, I didn't want to make any effort. I didn't want to make sacrifices, I didn't want to be professional," he revealed in an interview with The Guardian.
"It was when I became aware of all this that I needed to change. I'm very, very proud of the way I took on my responsibilities.
I'm really different now and I've been rewarded for all those choices this year.
A lot of good things have happened just by trying to be better, to be a better person by being totally independent."
