Trailing 1-5 in the first set, the Argentine turned the tide to win the set 7-6. The 24-year-old player then showed great opportunism to break his opponent’s serve and secure the match.

Comesana ended the Frenchman’s streak of four consecutive first-round victories. A quarterfinalist in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona, this is a hard blow for France’s top-ranked player, who exits the Spanish tournament prematurely.

After defeating Martinez in the previous round, the Argentine will face his compatriot Cerundolo for a spot in the round of 16.
