Fonseca wants to match Sinner at Next Gen ATP Finals: "It would be incredible to emulate Jannik".

Fonseca wants to match Sinner at Next Gen ATP Finals: It would be incredible to emulate Jannik.

João Fonseca is making a big impression. At the Next Gen ATP Finals, the number 8 seed in Jeddah completed a faultless run to the final.

He played a very solid match in the semi-finals against Luca Van Assche and will challenge Learner Tien, whom the Brazilian beat in the group stage earlier in the week, for the title.

At 18 years, 4 months and 1 day, he could become the second-youngest champion in the tournament's history, behind Jannik Sinner who was crowned at 18 years, 2 months and 24 days in 2019.

Speaking to the ATP website, Fonseca didn't hold back his pleasure and hopes to follow in the footsteps of the current world number 1: "I'm very proud of the way I played.

I was very solid. I did what I was told to do all week, which was to play aggressively. When you play in a tournament, you always have to believe.

My aim was to have fun here, because I was the last player to qualify. I enjoyed myself and I love playing in these big stadiums.

I'm playing very, very well this week and I've still got one match to go. It would be incredible to emulate Jannik Sinner.

It shows that I'm on the right track and it would be special to do the same as him," he asserted.
