WTA Finals: Kudermetova/Mertens Pair Qualifies for the Final After Victory Over Siniakova/Townsend
We now know the lineup for the doubles final at the WTA Finals. Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens, who triumphed in this same tournament in 2022, defeated Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend in the semifinals this Friday after a tough battle.
Following the eliminations of the pairs Sara Errani/Jasmine Paolini and Dabrowski/Routliffe (the defending champions) in the group stages, last year's finalists, Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend, seemed to be the new favorites to win the title in Riyadh.
To do so, they had to hold their ground against a formidable duo composed of Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens, this year's Wimbledon champions. The match lived up to all expectations, and it took until the super tie-break of the third set to determine the second pair qualified for the WTA Finals final.
Ultimately, it was Kudermetova and Mertens, after saving a match point, who proved to be the strongest in the crucial moments (4-6, 7-6, 10-6 in 1h52). Having already won this tournament together in 2022, Kudermetova and Mertens advance to the final, where they will face Timea Babos and Luisa Stefani this Saturday.
