No one believed it: The day Chardy eliminated Medvedev, a top 5 player, at Bercy 2019

It was October 29, 2019, at the AccorHotels Arena. The draw for the Paris-Bercy Masters 1000 seemed cruel: Jérémy Chardy, who had come through the qualifying rounds, was drawn against the mighty Daniil Medvedev, fresh off a US Open final and a member of the top 5, in the tournament's second round.
But while many expected a straightforward affair, Bercy delivered an unexpected script this time.
Carried by an incandescent crowd, the man from Pau delivered one of the greatest matches of his career, dominating the Russian 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 after 2 hours in an electric atmosphere. Facing a Medvedev in full ascent, Chardy was strong that night.
And since that evening, no Frenchman had beaten a member of the world's top 5 until Ugo Humbert at Bercy in 2024, who achieved a similar feat against Carlos Alcaraz.
