Bitter Defeat for Jacquemot Against Jabeur in Berlin Qualifiers
Ons Jabeur and Elsa Jacquemot faced off this Saturday in the first round of the WTA 500 Berlin qualifiers.
Jabeur, a two-time Wimbledon finalist (2022 and 2023), returned to one of her favorite surfaces but nearly fell into the trap against Jacquemot. The Frenchwoman had won the first set before Jabeur leveled the score.
The third set, lasting an hour, provided a true spectacle for those in attendance. The two players were neck-and-neck until the tie-break, which was full of twists and turns. Jacquemot first saved two match points before slipping to 7-7 and taking a medical timeout.
Despite the scare, the world No. 113 fought back and managed to fend off two more match points. She had the opportunity to close the match at 10-9 and 11-10 in her favor, but after 24 points played and a score of 13-11, she ultimately fell short in the tie-break.
Jabeur, who painfully qualified (4-6, 7-5, 7-6) for the second round of the qualifiers, will now compete for a spot in the main draw against Xinyu Wang.
Another Frenchwoman in action in Berlin, Chloé Paquet, lost to Ajla Tomljanovic (0-6, 6-3, 6-4).
