Monfils beats Altmaier to reach the third round of the Australian Open

Gaël Monfils is in excellent form and continues to prove it. The Frenchman defeated Daniel Altmaier, ranked 101st in the world, in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday.

Despite conceding three breaks, Monfils won in three sets, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6.

He cleared up rumours about his potential doubles partnership with Richard Gasquet at Roland-Garros. He declared: "It will be in Monte Carlo. There was a little misunderstanding."

He will face Taylor Fritz in the third round, winner of Cristian Garin 6-2, 6-1, 6-0.
