Keys on the Depth of ATP and WTA Circuits: "We See That There Can Be Twenty Different Players Who Can Win a Tournament"
Winner of the Australian Open earlier this year, Madison Keys has reached a new level. The world No. 5, who was just eliminated in the quarterfinals in Madrid, took the time to discuss several topics in a press conference.
When asked about the current state of tennis in both the women's and men's games, the American responded: "More and more, we see that there can be twenty different players who can win a tournament. That it wouldn’t be a surprise. I think that’s partly because we’ve lost some legends.
Serena Williams isn’t in every draw anymore, and we knew she was the heavy favorite to win everything. On the men’s side, we no longer have Roger, Rafa, and Novak every week. But I think the baseline level has risen, and the margin for error has shrunk.
You can see it in certain wins and losses, which are getting tighter. If both players are playing well, the match will be fantastic. I think everyone has improved. The game has become much more physical.
Everyone is investing in their careers by hiring physiotherapists, fitness specialists… Now there are more players who are faster, stronger, and able to stay healthy for longer."
