Fonseca launches 2024 season with victory!

Joao Fonseca never ceases to impress. Crowned at the Next Gen Masters in November, the Brazilian has just won his first match of the season with disconcerting ease. Entering the Challenger 125 in Canberra, the gifted 18-year-old wasted no time, winning in less than an hour (6-1, 6-3).

He brilliantly crushed a totally impotent Mackenzie McDonald (131ᵉ, ex 37ᵉ world). Fonseca continues to bluff his way through and will meet Duje Ajdukovic for a place in the quarter-finals.

Incidentally, he's not the only player born in 2006 to reach the last 16 of a Challenger this week. In fact, Martin Landaluce (151ᵉ and world junior number 1 in 2022), Rei Sakamoto (413ᵉ world, world junior number 1 in 2024) and Charlie Camus (1036ᵉ) all made it through the first round in a Challenger.
