Tsitsipas on Fonseca: "We'll see him do great things in the coming years".
In recent days, João Fonseca has hit the Next Gen ATP Finals hard.
The 18-year-old Brazilian put in a faultless performance to claim the title from Learner Tien in the final. Currently ranked 145th in the world, Fonseca will be closely watched over the coming months.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, who attended a press conference ahead of the United Cup he will be taking part in with Greece, was asked about the Brazilian player's progress. He sees a great future for him.
"I spoke to him in Halle this year. We spent a few hours together. I saw he had potential, even before he won the Next Gen ATP Finals.
I was sure he was going to be a player who would have good results in the months to come.
I think this is just the start of his progression up the rankings and he'll be able to show his full potential. I'm delighted for him.
He's a humble lad. That's what I like about him. I like the fact that he has his feet firmly on the ground. He's determined and focused on the goals he's set himself.
That's something that stands out about him. We'll see him achieve great things in the years to come, provided he stays in the same frame of mind as he is now. There's no reason why he should underperform," he assures us.
