Paolini looks back on her Australian Open defeat: "I was very nervous, I lacked concentration".

Paolini looks back on her Australian Open defeat: I was very nervous, I lacked concentration.

Number 4 seed at the Australian Open, Jasmine Paolini saw her dreams of a title in Melbourne brought to a premature end.

In the third round, the Italian was eliminated by Elina Svitolina after easily winning the first set (2-6, 6-4, 6-0).

Present at the press conference after the match, the two-time Grand Slam finalist from last season was lucid and felt that the Ukrainian deserved her success.

"I should have been more incisive at the start of the second set. From that moment on, she started to play at a higher level than me.

Her tennis got better and better, while mine fell apart. I'd been training with her this week and knew she was playing at a very good level.

The first set went well, I tried to keep the intensity in my game and she certainly played slower than she did in the last two sets.

I was very nervous and I wasn't lucid, I lacked concentration. Two or three points that you negotiate badly at this level make all the difference.

It was a good match and she's playing really well. If she keeps going like this, she can go very far in the tournament.

She's a top quality player, she's been playing at a high level for many years and she knows how to win matches. In this match, she was better than me," concluded Paolini.
