Sinner: I have never played the real Davis Cup

The debate is heating up again: Sinner, the double defending champion, will not play the Davis Cup this year. The Italian regrets a format that "no longer creates excitement" and advocates for a biennial edition, true to the spirit of the old encounters.

The Davis Cup is back at the heart of discussions. Just days before the start of the final phase, several tour stars have spoken out about the competition's current format.

This is the case, for example, for Jannik Sinner, who has decided to skip the event this year after winning two consecutive editions in 2023 and 2024.

The world No. 2 expressed his wish to see the Davis Cup played every two years and to return to a more traditional format:

"With this schedule, it's complicated for the best players from each country to be present every year. In the future, I would like to see the Davis Cup played every two years. That way, we could have the semi-finals at the start of the year, and the final towards the end of the year.

If we take the example of a USA-Australia tie in Bologna, I'm not saying there won't be spectators in the stands.

But why not have a real Davis Cup? I have never had the opportunity to play the real Davis Cup, the one where you go to Brazil or Argentina, with a whole stadium behind their country. That is the real Davis Cup.

As Italians, we are lucky to be able to play at home. Malaga wasn't very far either. We always have a lot of support, a lot of people who travel to see us, who love tennis.

At the same time, this year, we can have a USA-Australia tie in Bologna. The Davis Cup thrill is missing."
