The Murray Shock: What He Really Felt After His Olympic Title in Rio in 2016
Andy Murray has looked back on one of the greatest moments of his career, revealing that he never really had the time to savor it.
The Brit thought he had reached the peak of his sport by winning Olympic gold in Rio in 2016. Yet, with the medal barely around his neck, he didn't have a minute to grasp the magnitude of his achievement.
"It's tough; when you're trying to achieve goals, there's always the next tournament or the following week. The pressure to get good results is already intense. It's difficult. When I won the Rio Olympics in 2016, I finished the match and it was over.
You get your gold medal, do a few interviews, and then that same evening, you take a 12-hour flight from Rio to Cincinnati for a tournament that started two days later. And that's it, you immediately move on to another match and another competition. I wish I had enjoyed those moments more," he confides.
Murray thus describes a reality often overlooked by the public: the constant race for the next goal, the next ranking, the next result.
