Ben Shelton finally won a match at Roland-Garros. Up against Hugo Gaston, the American was pushed around before finally getting the better of his opponent (3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in 2h34).
Shelton's victory was achieved in a wildly enthusiastic atmosphere, with the crowd cheering loudly for his opponent. In fact, he went even further, explaining that it was great fun to play matches in this kind of atmosphere. Indeed, playing against an entire stadium seems to galvanize the world No. 15. On this subject, he declared: "It was an absolutely incredible atmosphere. It's the first time I've been to a match where there was an orchestra playing on the court. I really like that kind of atmosphere. Today, there was such a positive energy on the court, it was fantastic.
Quite honestly, it motivates me, because every time we make an unprovoked mistake, hearing the noise of the public gives me energy. Incredible energy. Now I know that if I play in France against a Frenchman, the atmosphere will be crazy, and that's something I really enjoy in the end."
In the next round, he faces a former Grand Slam finalist: Kei Nishikori.
