Boris Becker Blasts McEnroe's 'Unacceptable' Criticism of Zverev
John McEnroe's comments on the US Open final didn't sit well with Boris Becker. The former champion stepped up to defend Alexander Zverev and remind everyone of the German's performances this season.
Three days after the US Open final, Boris Becker has come to Alexander Zverev's defense.
On the podcast he co-hosts with former player Andrea Petkovic, the former world No. 1 addressed the remarks made on air by John McEnroe, who had implored Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner "to come back in form" for the Australian Open.
'These Comments Are Unacceptable'
The comment was aimed directly at Zverev, as McEnroe was clearly not impressed by the German's level during the two weeks in New York.
Frustrated by the American's remarks, Becker decided to respond directly:
"First of all, it's not his fault that Sinner got injured and Alcaraz was out for four months.
He can only beat the opponents who are in front of him, and I genuinely find some of these comments unacceptable.
Zverev has won two Grand Slams, reached three consecutive finals, and in Australia he even served for the match in the semifinal against Alcaraz. People need to finally give him the respect he deserves."
