Carlota Martínez Honest About Her Career: "Without One of the Four Grand Slams, It’s Impossible to Make a Living"

Carlota Martínez was the only Spanish player to receive a wild card for the main draw of the WTA Madrid Open. She lost to Maya Joint in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 6-4).
In an interview with *Punto de Break*, the world No. 240 reflected on the changing mindset in tennis and the challenges of making a living from the sport:
"Right now, there are tennis players who last until 40 and take time to reach the top. Nowadays, it’s no longer a failure if, at 24, you’re not in the top 100 or top 150.
As the 240th-ranked player, I can’t make a living from it. I’m on the edge, very close to Grand Slam qualifying. If you manage to play those four tournaments, you get a massive boost. Otherwise, it’s impossible to survive.
It’s frustrating when you think about it. You’re among the 240 best players in the world, and you don’t make a living from tennis. It’s a shame that in smaller tournaments, you hardly earn any money."
